Die Welt von The Vale of Eternity ist voller magischer Kreaturen wie Riesen, Drachen, Phönixen, Nessie und vielen mehr. Als Bändiger*innen wollen die Spielenden die mächtigsten von ihnen zähmen und beschwören, um mit ihrer Hilfe die meisten Punkte zu sammeln. Insgesamt 70 Kreaturen, inspiriert von unterschiedlichen Mythologien, die unterschiedlichste Strategien erlauben, gibt es im Spiel zu entdecken.

In jeder Runde werden zunächst neue Kreaturen aufgedeckt, die die Spielenden dann verkaufen können, um Runensteine zu erhalten. Alternativ können sie auch Kreaturen zähmen, um sie auf die Hand zu nehmen, Kreaturen beschwören, um diese von der Hand vor sich auszulegen, oder Kreaturen freilassen, um sie abzulegen. In der Aktivierungsphase greifen schließlich alle Effekte der Kreaturen der eigenen Auslage. Wer die Fähigkeiten der Kreaturen bestmöglich kombinieren kann, wird The Vale of Eternity gewinnen.
